What Constitutes A Dental Emergency?
Our teeth are tough, but they aren’t indestructible. Dental emergencies can be obvious, such as if you knock a tooth out when slipping on a wet floor. Other issues such as sensitivity probably aren’t emergencies, but they could be
Some things, such as a knocked-out tooth or a broken tooth, are obvious dental emergencies. We need to see you and get that tooth back in place to have the best chance of saving it. Others aren’t obvious. For instance, facial swelling usually isn’t an emergency.
If you wonder whether your dental problem that just occurred is an emergency situation or not, call our office and talk with the on-call person. Then you’ll get an idea of the next step, whether it means you need to come in immediately or if it can wait until the next business day.
See your dentist right away to increase the chances of getting the knocked-out tooth reattached.
1. Handle the tooth with care.
2. Hold it by the top part (the crown) and gently rinse with running water.
3. Try to place the tooth back in the socket and keep it in place using a piece of gauze.
4. If it’s painful or uncomfortable to keep in the tooth socket, put the knocked-out tooth in a container of saliva or milk.
If your tooth has been broken, chipped, or cracked rinse your mouth out with warm water and apply a cold compress to your face. If you have the piece of the tooth that was chipped or broken off wrap it in a wet towel or piece of gauze and bring it in as soon as possible.
Most dental emergency cases are because of toothache or pain. This can be caused by trauma, infection, cavities, or erupting wisdom teeth. A visit to your dentist can help find the cause of the pain and lasting relief with tooth extractions, sedation dentistry, and other dental treatments.
For severe and life-threatening injuries, please call 911 or, if possible, go directly to the nearest hospital emergency room. Your dentist in Webster can treat traumatic dental injuries, including lost, chipped, or knocked-out teeth as well as toothaches.
Thoroughly clean around the sore area. Rinse by swishing with warm salt water and/or try to dislodge trapped food or debris from the teeth with dental floss. You can take over the counter pain reliever like ibuprofen to help ease the pain until you can see us. If your face is swollen, apply a cold compress. Contact us immediately if swelling is present. In some cases, swelling can be a sign of infection and would require urgent treatment.
Thoroughly clean the area with a wet cloth and place a cold compress on the area to help reduce the swelling. If the bleeding continues or is to excessive go to an emergency center.
Try to keep the jaw from moving by using a towel, tie or handkerchief. Get to the nearest emergency room immediately.
What Is The Benefit Of Coming To Clear Lake For My Dental Emergency?
Many dentists claim to have emergency service, but when you call them after you’ve broken a tooth during a pickup football game on a Saturday afternoon, you get an answering service. And then hopefully you’ll get a call back in a timely fashion.
Many people go to the emergency room when that call doesn’t come. That’s not a good idea. Emergency rooms aren’t meant for dental issues; they are meant for body trauma and body injuries.
It’s a far better idea to call our office, as we provide on-call service for any dental emergency. This applies 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Simply call 832-479-4676 and our team will be contacted immediately. We view emergency dental care as just another one of our core services.

How Soon After Arriving At The Office Will I Be Treated?
Our objective in emergency dentistry is to provide care right away. Dental emergencies are worked into the schedule as quickly as possible. Depending on the severity of the problem, an appointment is arranged immediately, later the same day, or within a few days. When an appointment is not immediately available or necessary, you may receive instructions to manage comfort at home until you can be seen by the dentist. Patients who are experiencing a painful dental problem are usually seen the same day and escorted to a treatment room within a few minutes of arriving at the office.
We Are Here For You
One thing that we want to remind you about at Clear Lake Dental Care is that our main goal is to serve you. In doing this, we make sure that we offer efficient dental emergency services that will have your dental emergency treated as quickly as possible.
Our dental emergency procedures at Clear Lake Dental Care are just one way we show our appreciation to you. Why take a chance at another dental practice that may not be able to treat your dental emergency in a timely manner, leaving you to suffer in pain even longer? At Clear Lake Dental Care, you will be our number one priority when it comes to the treatment of your dental emergency.
Some people don’t know if what just happened to their tooth or teeth constitutes an emergency. They worry the dentist will minimize the situation and tell them to call back during office hours.
That’s a bad idea, and that’s why we encourage our patients who think they may have a dental emergency to call us at (281) 985-5301. Let us decide if we need to see you immediately.
Otherwise, you’ll likely make a bad situation worse. For instance, if you knock out a tooth and we can see you within 60 minutes, there’s a good chance we can save the tooth. A tooth we see within 60 minutes can be attached to the adjacent teeth on each side with what we call a splint. This will keep the tooth in place for several days. If that happens, most teeth can reattach to the bone in about three to four weeks. Teeth with more damage are still savable, but they may require a little more time.
A knocked-out filling is another issue. It probably isn’t an emergency, but if you choose to not treat it by the next business day, you’re simply opening the center of the tooth up to the invasion of bacteria. Obviously, the tooth already had decay — that’s why it had a filling — and the filling may have come loose as more decay has formed. Leaving the filling out of the tooth ensures you’ll have more decay, and you could end up losing the tooth to extraction.
Dental insurance usually covers emergency care, yes. Patients should expect their normal co-pay, annual maximum, or deductibles to apply as they would with routine dental care.
If you experience a dental emergency, contact our office right away, no matter what time of day it is. After hours, calls are accepted by an answering service that can relay information to one of our on-call dentists. We will get back to you right away to determine whether or not you need to come to the office immediately or if your situation can be managed at home until the following morning.
It is rare for a dental emergency to be life-threatening, though every unexpected or persistent dental problem should be addressed right away. The most urgent situations may involve hemorrhage or excessive bleeding, an open fracture or wound, or severe infection. Symptoms such as fever, pain that does not improve with at-home treatment, swelling, redness, or heat in a localized area of the mouth, or oozing from an oral wound or tooth warrant emergency dental care.
