What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are used in a variety of situations. They can be placed over the abutment of a restoration called a dental implant to replace a single tooth, or cover a tooth that has a weak structure and may need an extra layer of protection. Dental crowns are caps that are made of porcelain materials to bond over these teeth (or an abutment) to restore and protect the smile. It is not uncommon for patients to be told that they may benefit from the fabrication and placement of a dental crown.
What Can I Expect During The Procedure?
First, the dentist will prepare the tooth that the dental crown will be placed over. The dentist removes the surrounding structure of natural tooth enamel so that the cap has space to be bonded in place. After preparations, an impression is taken of the prepared tooth and used to fabricate the final restoration. This is done at an outside dental laboratory and requires approximately one to two weeks to complete. When done, patients come back to the dental office to have their final restoration bonded in place. Patients with a dental implant that needs a dental crown will not need to have impressions or preparations done prior to ordering the final restoration.
