Porcelain Veneers
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are thin shells of porcelain applied to the front side of your natural teeth to alter the tooth shape, color, and size. Porcelain veneers are an effective option for covering imperfections.

What Concerns Can Veneers Fix?
At Clear Lake Dental Care, we use porcelain veneers to improve various imperfections of our patients’ teeth. Veneers can:
- Close gaps
- Cover chips
- Make alignment issues
- Revitalize the tooth surface
- Change the shape of a tooth
- Cover cracks and worn teeth
- Cover teeth stained in the dentin
- Provide an alternative to orthodontic movement
The Porcelain Veneer Procedure
At Clear Lake Dental, the process of placing Porcelain veneers require two appointments, but you will still be going home with a beautiful smile after just one. Here’s how we do it. First, we clean your teeth to remove any stains in the enamel. We may opt to do some whitening to be sure your teeth are returned to their natural color. Then we use a shade guide to select the porcelain to use for your veneers. Next, we prepare the front surface of each tooth that will receive a veneer. This involves shaving off a tiny amount of the surface enamel to make room for the veneers. Generally, this is from 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm.

Now we take a series of impressions and other measurements of your prepared teeth. These impressions are then sent to a lab where the porcelain restorations will be created. You will leave our office with beautiful, temporary veneers while the permanent veneers are being created.
Once the veneers are finished, we check the fit and color match with your adjacent natural teeth. Then we permanently cement the veneers to your teeth and you’re good to go out and show the world your new perfect smile.
Dental Crowns Vs. Veneers
A dental crown covers the entire tooth. It’s typically made of porcelain or porcelain along with other restorative materials. Veneers are also made of porcelain but they only cover one side of the tooth’s surface instead of fitting around the entire tooth. Typically veneers are used to correct cosmetic concerns.
Experts In The Field
In life, most people do not have the “perfect smile”. You may have a gap here or there. You may have a chipped tooth. Your teeth could be permanently stained from a reaction to tetracycline in your youth. At Clear Lake Dental Care, we use porcelain veneers to mask cosmetic imperfections and give our patients a dazzling, perfect smile.
When you visit Clear Lake Dental Care & Implant Center, you can expect your dentist to spend a good amount of time listening to your concerns and objectives. Your smile is unique, and your treatment plan must be tailored to that. The number of veneers you may need will depend on what you want to accomplish. The use of a single porcelain veneer to cover a tough stain or other cosmetic flaw on one tooth is enough to transform the smile in some cases.
No. Porcelain veneer treatment does involve the slight reduction of surface enamel in the teeth we will cover. For this step, your dentist may administer local anesthetic to the area so you do not feel any discomfort from the vibration of the dental instrument. After your teeth have been prepared through this minor reduction, you may experience some degree of sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures. This can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers taken as directed. Once your porcelain veneers are in place, sensitivity should resolve over time.
Veneers are made to be replaceable so do not have a permanent bond. The downside to this is that they are not made to withstand extraordinary pressure or twisting. Veneers sometimes do come off. If you lose a veneer, rinse it off and place it in a safe space. If the veneer is not compromised, we may be able to replace it with a new bonding material. Just contact our office and we’ll schedule an appointment for you right away.
Your dentist has the precise training and experience to match your veneers to adjacent teeth. If you need only one or two veneers but want a brighter smile, your dentist may recommend teeth whitening treatment before your new veneers are made. This allows them to match the new shade of your teeth with your veneers.
